World war 2 happened because of some unresolved disputes post World War 1. By the end of the war, new countries in Europe and the Middle East formed. It also resulted in the formation of the Soviet Union with the collapse of the Russian Empire. Italy joined Germans as both had similar nationalist policies, which was against socialist ideas of an egalitarian and classless society. Italian socialist party, which was a major democratic party under the monarch before world war 1, had its philosophy oriented towards “no aggression” meant that taking part in the war and conquering countries was never a progressive method.  However, they lost the support of the masses due to the formation of a party led by Benito Mussolini, whose ideas were based on wars as a medium of improving the economic status of the nation.

Though Mussolini fascism was on conquering lands, he never supported world war 2. He was keen on extending the Italian empire in North Africa. His first aggression was the war on Libya for the killing of an Italian general.

When he signed agreements with hostile countries to prevent war he stood on his principle of staying neutral on the world. However, the German invasion of Poland made the United Kingdom declare war on Germany. Italy owed allegiance due to the same ideology of Germany.

Mussolini sent forces to assist the German invasion of France. He had also planned to attack the United Kingdom that was spoiled by the defeat of Germans in the Soviet union.

After the capture of Germany, it became sure that axis domination in the war would end.

In 1945, allies invaded Italy. Some facist countries helped Mussolini to escape to Northern Italy and set a provincial government. However, the allies captured the entire Italy. Italian socialists captured Mussolini while they flee to Switzerland.

Mussolini was executed by a firing squad in 1945. It was an end to fascism and imperialism.
